To Compost or Not to Compost?
I often get funny looks when on farm, when I ask people to stop applying raw FYM and start and make compost. There are a lot of reasons why I ask this and I am now going to start and work through the reasons why. When you dump raw manure on soil, a lot of the elements are not stable and need biology to convert them. Nitrogen, for instance, in a lot of cases is not fully available until the second year, as it is bound up in bacterial proteins and organic matter. Basically, the biology within the soil must do a lot of decomposition work, while still having the day job running alongside it, supporting the plant through the rhizophagy cycle. This makes the whole process inefficient in a lot of cases as you are asking too much from your work force which could lead to volatilization and leaching of the nitrogen.
