Potassium chloride… friend or foe?

Potassium chloride (MOP) is one of the most used fertilisers around the world, as it is a very cheap form of potassium, but is it actually good for your soil? The answer is definetely no! This is one that I learnt very early on. as I  started to reduce the amount of fertiliser I was using on farm. As my soil was becoming more biological and working more efficiently, my potassium levels were going through the roof. This was also due to the amount of cover crops that I was growing and then recycling the organic material, which was making potassium readily available within my soils. Since I was taking three cuts of grass for haylage within my rotation, I still believed that I needed to replace the potassium. This is where I learnt how toxic MOP is.
